Fly Line Floating
How come my dry flies dont float?

i use floating line foating tippet i use materials like deer hair and rooster hackle on my dry flies but they still sink

One mistake novice anglers make that can cause their dry flies to sink while fishing is they don't add fly floatant to the fly before fishing the fly. Many fish the dry fly first and then later add the fly floatant once they find it sinking during their drifts. You can help your fly float much longer if you apply the fly floatant right off the bat before fishing.

Also, how well your dry fly will float also will be determined by the flies overall size and what type of what your fishing. For example, if your fishing a small dry fly in fast riffles (Choppy or White Water) it is going to have a hard time floating no matter how much floatant is applied to the dry fly. In this situation your best option is to present or cast the dry fly further down the riffle where the water begins to calm down a bit. The larger the fly the better it will float in choppy or big riffles. The smaller the dry fly the less buoyant it will be.

Hope this helps. You can find more fly fishing tips like this by visiting my Georgia Fly Fishing Blog at www.kent-klewein.com/georgia-fly-fishing-blog/

Unless you plan on clubbing fish with your rod, you'll need a line to bring him in.  There are a few things you need to know about choosing fly fishing lines.  This article will give you a few tips.

Taper

One of the first things you need to consider when choosing line is the taper.  You'll have to decide between weight-forward and double taper.  If you prefer roll casting, then you'll probably want to use a double taper line.  Weight-forward lines are better suited for use in windy situations.

Floating

When choosing fly fishing lines, you also need to choose between sinking and floating designs.  If you want to use a dry fly, you won't have a choice as you will be forced to use a floating line that sits atop the water.

Lines that sink are better suited for fishing in deeper water.  However, you'll probably have to retrieve all of the line if you want to cast again.  This isn't a problem when the line floats.

Size

Another important consideration is the line's size or diameter.  Thicker lines will be more durable.  However, they will also be easier for fish to spot.  Lines that are thinner have the benefit of giving certain lures more realistic action.

The diameter will also play a role in the line's stiffness.  Although stiffer fly fishing lines are more sensitive to fish activity, they're usually harder for you to cast.  If you're going after stronger fish, you should consider buying line that stretches more, so that it doesn't break easily.

i'm really interested in giving this a bash for the grayling in the river taff but don't know how to set up the line. i'll be using a 10ft 4# rod with a floating line so that's ok but i'm lost from there. ie how long should the leeder be, how far apart should the flies be, casting, which should be the heaviest fly on which dropper or point etc.

i'm quite new to this and can't find any info anywhere. any help would be much appreciated

Fly Fishing Tackle is the equipment you need to go fly fishing. You might already have some fishing tackle, or you might be a total beginner, and unsure of what you need.

At the very least you'll be looking at:

Fishing Rods

These vary in size, price and material. Carbon and bamboo rods are popular and lightweight, so that they can be used all day. Different sorts of rods are suitable for catching different sorts of fish. If you're not sure of what you need, ask your friends what they are using, do your research online, or ask at your local fishing shop.

Fishing Reels

Reels hold the fishing line, and vary in price and quality. If you fish for trout, you might want a reel that allows you to wind the line and out in by hand. If you fish for salmon, and spend more time in the water, you'll want a reel that is up to the job. You won't need the most complicated, feature-rich or expensive reel to start with, and you might find that you don't need to spend a lot on your fishing reel.

Fishing Lines

Lines vary in length and price. You'll have some ideas as to what sort of fish you want to catch, and where you'll be fishing, so you'll know what sort of lines to look for. You might walready know what brand of line you want, or what your friends use, or whether a floating or sinking line is right for you.  If not, then you should be able to find out online, from your friends or at your local tackle shop.

Flies

Flies, baits and lures are also important, and what you use will depend upon the fish you want to catch, where you are fishing, and the time of year. There are many different sorts of flies to choose from, and it may come down to personal preference, or asking what other people use.  You might even want to tie your own flies.

Waders

Chest high or waist high waders are essential if you are going to spend a lot of time in the water, perhaps if you are catching salmon in rivers. You should look for waders that are warm, and are resistant to rips and tears, so that if you bump into a branch, or snag your waders on a rock or something else in the water, they won't tear. If you're new to fishing, then there's little point in spending your a lot of your budget on waders if you're unlikely to use them.

Tackle box

A bag or box is another essential for carrying all of your fishing tackle with you. You might be spending all day fishing, and so will need additional food and drinks, as well as all your tackle, so you need to make sure that the bag or box you choose will be big enough.

You might need different sorts of clothing depending on where and when you fish, and what you fish for. If you're going to be fishing for salmon, and spending all day stood in a river, you're going to need warm and waterproof clothing with big easy to access pockets, so that you can get what you need even if your hands are wet and cold.

Getting started doesn't have to be expensive, but having the right equipment from the start will make it easier, and more enjoyable. If you've thought about taking up fishing, why not get the fishing tackle you need and go fishing today?

If you're a beginner looking for Fishing Tackle or an experienced angler looking to upgrade your fishing rod or Fishing Reels, why not make sure that you've got all you need before you set off for a day's fishing?
