You want to get the fish in your boat once you catch it. But the question is how to go about it. Well, the following steps which will help you out in this situation.

Setting the hook is a very important step and you should take make sure that it is set in the right way. To lure the bass you can use a Treble hook. However upon striking the bass may not hook itself always. You need a solid impact and a sharp pointed hook to go through the strong jaws of the bass. Snap your rod back as the strike occurs and roll until the line becomes tight. Maintain a regular pressure on the fish; this will make the hooks penetrate further in the jaws.

However you should wait for some time before setting the hook in case of top waters. You may accidentally pull the lure away from the mouth of the bass and this will help the fish in getting away. Bass has the tendency to inhale the lure totally, so you must make a solid and strong strike so that the hooks are driven in properly. Spinner baits, plastic worms and jigs are some of the single hook lures. They must have a planned and strong hook set.

You must keep certain points in your mind while setting the hook. Sweeping back your rod after tightening down on the bass is of no use. Only the head of the fish will be turned by this. Your rod should be set between 10 and 11 o'clock position the movement you feel the strike. Facing the fish you should put down the rod top quickly. With the help of a quick overhead strike snap the slack out of the line. After this you need to set the hook and set it with a powerful jerk in the upward direction. This is known as the slack line method and it should be used while setting the hook.

Setting a drag is important because the dragging of reel can lead to line slippage. Never adjust the setting of the drag to set the drag. Don't pull the line directly to the spool. Now, the reading of line pull which will be exerted by the lure will in an incorrect one. Before pulling the line, you need to adjust the drag. You can also attach a heavy object at the end of the line and then adjust the drag accordingly. Set the drag in such a way that it is not more than half of the pound test of the line.

Back reeling is a technique in which the handle of the reel is used to pay out or take-in as per the demand of the fish. It is a method to have the fish on the spinning reel. Drag is tightened down in back reeling. This technique may appear difficult to beginners. However it can be mastered after a lot of practice. The advantage of this method is that the twist of the line is reduced because you don't reel when the fish is pulling the line against the drag.

Now to land a fish you need a net but since the bass has no teeth, you can land it without using the net. The net may also damage the fish sometimes. There are two methods by which you can land the bass.

First method is known as the Net method. Bring the fish next to the boat. Make sure that you net is not knotted and then put it into the water. Generally the bass will swim into the net however you may need to draw the fish towards the net sometimes. Next bring the fish up with the help of a smooth and single motion. Avoid swiping at a bass which is not ready to come on to the boat. Also make sure that you don't net the fish downward.

Lip Landing is another method which you can use to land the bass. Bring the fish closer to the boat using a rod. The spring action of the rod will behave as a shock absorber if the fish tries to run. Reeling up a lot of line is not required. Adequate pressure needs to be maintained on the line. Rod should be drawn back over one shoulder. Next, pull the fish towards yourself. You need to press your thumb against the tip of the jaws if the mouth of the fish in closed. This step will lead to opening of the mouth. Now, compress the lower jaw of the fish between your thumb and forefinger. Use both hands to hold the jaw if the bass is big. Finally, lift the fish on to the boat.

When you're a beginner fly fishing for the first time, one of the most frustrating things can be figuring out how to attach a leader to your fly line. The most widely accepted method is to use a well tied nail knot, but if you're not an experienced knot tier, tying a nail knot isn't the easiest thing in the world. Worse yet, if you don't practice the knot regularly, you may not remember how to do it if you need to make on stream repairs. You can attempt to tie easier knots, but these often leave too big of a bulge where the leader and fly line come together which then gets caught in your guides when you're reeling in a trout, tangles during your back cast, or snags on things in the water. Is there a better alternative?

With decades of experience chasing trout around the Pacific Northwest, I have tried many different knots and attached my leaders to my fly line in a variety of ways. My favorite method is one you might not expect. One of the least known, but most effective ways to attach a leader to a fly line is through the use of super glue.

Advantages to this method are that it leaves virtually no bulge at all so it won't catch on the guides or ruin your back cast. Also, tension between the fly line and leader actually creates a "Chinese finger trap" effect that makes the connection strong and durable. I do recommend making a new connection each season, but I've never had any problems attaching my line and leader with this method.

Beginner fly fishing fanatics will appreciate this method because it's easy to do and easy to remember. A small repair kit containing a needle, super glue, and a cigarette lighter can easily be carried in a vest pocket or tackle box so you can do on stream repairs or attach another leader if necessary. Here's how the method works.

First, take a small sewing needle and stick it into the end of the fly line. Try to insert it between 1/4" and 1/2" into the fly line. The purpose of this is to widen the diameter of the fly line so the leader can be pushed inside. To make it easier, use a cigarette lighter underneath the fly line to help it expand. As the line warms, it will expand around the needle, creating a perfect hole for your leader. Just don't get the lighter too close or you'll start the line on fire and melt it. If you do, just trim the melted piece off and start over.

Next, use sandpaper to rough up the end of the leader and put some super glue (I highly recommend you use Zap-A-Gap in the green bottle) around the end of the leader. Roughing up the leader with sandpaper allows a better bond for the glue. Next, slide the leader into the space you just created in the end of the fly line. Hold it there for 30 seconds or so to let the glue dry. Pull the fly line and leader in opposite directions as if you were fighting a fish to make sure the connection holds. If it does, smear a dab of super glue around the outside of the knot for extra holding power. That's all there is to it. After all, even beginners fly fishing for the first time should have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Best way to clean my tackle boxes?

For the first time I have accumulated a little rust on some of the lures in a few of my plano boxes. Some of my lures have a little rust on the hooks. This is because I may have been a little careless this year in making sure I let them dry out after fishing trips or days in the rain. Now that I've emptied them, is there something specific I should clean the Plano boxes out with? I've wiped them out and soaked them in soapy water. I've heard that the rust can "Hide in the cracks" if you will.

Rust and plastic don't go well, they stain it and removing it is very awkward. There are various things you can try, which have worked in the past for me, try cleaning it with a little alcohol, if that doesn't work spray a small amount of WD-40 onto it and clean with a dry cloth.

If you feel WD-40 is too strong i would really recommend using liquid silicone spray. It doesn't damage plastic, and can be used on electrical components.

Now to stop it forming again, and to help to dry out your box, if you forget and put the lures back wet try these, i have them in most of my bags to keep moisture out.

Leaders are necessary parts of sea fishing tackle. They protect the line from getting cut.

Anglers are rather divided when it comes to the question of whether a leader should form part of what is considered to be good sea fishing tackle or not. Many fishermen would rather not use leaders when they go out to fish, whilst just as many prefer not to leave out their leaders from their sea fishing tackle.

The thing is, a lot of fishermen, even the veteran ones, underestimate the importance of having a good leader in one’s sea fishing tackle. Its main function is to protect the line from being cut, frayed or tangled by fish with sharp teeth or gills. Out at sea, most fish to be caught have either sharp teeth or sharp gills, if not both. A secondary function of a leader is to make it easier for the fisherman to change hooks and lures whenever it is necessary to do so.

Before we go into a detailed discussion on leaders as part of good sea fishing tackle, we should define first what a leader is. A fishing leader is a thin piece of metal that has an eye on one end and a pin catch on the other. The fishing line is attached to the eye by threading the line through it and then knotting it securely, whilst the hooks and the lures are held in the pin catch.

There are three major types of leaders available in the market, you can either make your own or buy them from a sea fishing tackle shop. The three major types of leaders are:

1. Monofilament. Monofilament leaders are basic leaders. They are metal threads that that perform the base function of leaders – to protect the line from being cut.

2. Fluorocarbon. Fluorocarbon leaders are transparent, and this quality makes it ideal for them to be used in waters that are clear and full of wary fish. Fluorocarbon leaders are practically invisible in clear water.

3. Steel. Steel leaders are very strong. They are great for use when fishing in waters infested with fish with really sharp teeth such as barracuda, bluefish and mackerel.

There are also hybrid leaders, created from a combination of monofilament and fluorocarbon or any other material, such as plastic.

Leaders should be made part of any sea fishing tackle set because it can spell the difference between going home from a fishing trip with an empty icebox and a full one. Really, the game fish at sea can be wily and they can cut a naked line that is not protected by a leader. It would be a shame to lose a catch that way, especially when you have almost succeeded in landing it in the boat.

To make your leader more effective, you should keep the whole assembly as simple as possible. Just attach your hook and your lure to the leader and tie the whole thing to your line. If you hang any more stuff on it, you will only end up scaring the fish away.

A good leader is an essential part of your sea fishing tackle. Always have your leaders ready in your sea fishing tackle box before you sail out to sea.

Fishing lures are a key aspect of fishing and without them your chances of successfully catching a fish greatly diminish. Few fish will decide to come towards and bite a sharp shinny hook, while the vast majority of the fish will sense danger and swim away. There is a huge variety of different lures to choose from. Even with all the high tech products on the market which you can put on the hook in order to catch fish, I actually prefer to stick to the traditional way, the plastic worm. All that needs to be done is to gather a set of worms that can be found at any fishing store, place them in your tackle box with the rest of your fishing supplies, and attach one of the worms to your hook and fish. By placing your worm on the hook, fish will be more attracted to it and the catch of successfully catching a fish greatly increases. If you're really feeling adventurous you can even rub worm oil on your plastic worm to make it more realistic to the fish.

Krocodile Spoon Lures?

i bought some 5/8 oz and 1 oz krocs for SURF FISHING and they dont seem to produce anything... i tried everything there is to it (fast, slow, ripping, etc..) and got mad and bought some other design krocs.. and still nothing ): at the same spot, i threw my Lucky crfts and bam got hit >

1: how do YOU use them?

2: size matter? (description on each size will be nice please)

3: any sites that give good information would be a plus! (:
nothing yet?.. i guess no one actually uses these... ):

they work well in freshwater lakes and streams. i would buy a lure that is at least 6 inches long to catch something in the surf. the best bait for me is softshell sand crabs

The Eastern Shore of Maryland has several fantastic rivers for bass fishing including the Pocomoke, Wicomico, Nanticoke and Choptank Rivers. Anglers fish from private boats or fish with a local guide for largemouth bass and other freshwater fish in these waterways.

The Pocomoke River is one of the most popular fishing locations in Maryland, especially on the Delmarva peninsula. It starts as a small non-tidal stream and meanders down to the Chesapeake Bay. Guides offer fishing and site seeing charters year round on the Pocomoke, even in the winter months. Cold water fishing begins after thanksgiving to around the second week in March and can be surprisingly very good. Largemouth bass are a cold-blooded fish so their body temperature is the same as the water temperature for the most part.

Largemouth bass of the Pocomoke River avoid heavy current and prefer backwater areas where they can suspend and conserve energy in cold conditions. They might only feed a couple of days a week due to their slow metabolism so slower presentations with your baits are critical. Targeting areas like oxbows, marinas, cuts or ponds give winter anglers access to warmer water and low current. Guides focus on local conditions for success. For example, the sun hits the north and northwest shores most on the river in winter so your guide may target these areas looking for warmer water. A water temperature gauge is also useful for winter bass fishing on the Pocomoke. Cool water lures include spin baits, crank baits, jigs and senkos.

The next phase of fishing occurs in late March thru June. This period includes all phases of the spawn. Fishing guides look for spawning areas such as coves, flats and backwater areas. Bass fishermen also seek out deeper water with cover leading to spawning habitat. The pre-spawn fishing can be great around this structure. Water temperatures for pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn can vary greatly, so guides often suggest checking the spawning areas and migration routes leading to and away from them on every trip this time of year. Keep in mind bass prefer a sandy or hard bottom and must have sunlight to aid in hatching the eggs. Hard river bottoms are rare on this river but bass will make due with the best they can find. Productive lures during this period are senkos, tubes, lizards and flukes.

Summer is a favorite fishing season on the Pocomoke River as the fish are very active. The river is tidal which affects where fish congregate. A good low tide is at least three feet down. In summer this river is notorious for only dropping a foot or less and quickly filling back to high tide. Northeast winds usually back up water at the mouth of the river and it’s a good bet the next couple of days after that will be really high tides. Largemouth bass can still be caught by adapting to the conditions. Anglers can find containment areas like bulk heads, walls or high river banks the higher tides cannot get past. This holds the fish in an area you can still access. Also skipping baits like senkos and frogs on the flooded shorelines, creeks and pad fields will still produce. If you are lucky enough to get a good low tide, fish wood close to the channel drops, pad line drops and creeks with jigs, senkos, spinner baits and crank baits.

Fall is another preferred time to fish the Pocomoke River. The bass are not affected as much by cold fronts and very active in feeding up for tough days ahead. This is a great time to run way up the creeks like Nassawango and even further north above the Snow Hill Bridge. An experienced guide will cover lots of water in fall with crank baits, spin baits and buzz baits. Senkos, jigs and worms are always good for the tougher days in fall with high barometric pressures.

Does anyone have the new Shimano Stradic FI Fishing Reel?

If so what do you think of it?

I am thinking of getting one for bass fishing + inshore saltwater fishing.

I own the older Stradic series and think they are excellent reels. In fact the ONLY reels I own now-a-days are either Daiwa, Shimano, or Plfueger.(Although I do have a Lamson flyreel, & I use to own 5 Penns before I moved to MN & sold them. No reason to own a 650SS in MN!! lol)

However, after reading some reviews at (www.cabelas.com) I'm not so sure if the FI series will hold up over time. You are taking a chance they won't be as durable as their predecessors. Go read the review at cabelas.com!

At $159 there are some other choices that might not have as many "bugs" as the FI.

Example-If your gonna spend $159 on a Stradic (heck!) , spend $200 and get a Sustain! Bass Pro has them on sale!

And if your gonna spend $200 on a Sustain get a Quantum Cabo for $189! (logic!) Everyone RAVES about these reels on the flats!

I am NOT a Quantum buyer, but I have a friend who swears by them. Currently I'm living in MN, but when I move back home, (St. Augustine/Jacksonville FLA), I'm gonna buy a couple Cabo for exactly what you intend to use yours for- inshore salt & Bass fishing.

Currently, I have my eye on the BRAND NEW Pflueger Supreme XT ($129). I think it's gonna get purchased next week, by ME! (lol)

Anyway, thats just my 2 cents. When it comes to Reels & Rods everyone has an opinion!
