Scarce Old With leads scarce, Binghamton police offer $1,000 reward in fatal hit-and-run case
BINGHAMTON -- City police still have few leads in their investigation of a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a Binghamton man in early January.
Collecting coins is one of the most fun, interesting and rewarding hobbies there is. Aside from the thrill of searching for hard-to-find coins, another interesting and rewarding aspect of coin collecting is determining old coin value.
For example, you have just stumbled upon an old coin dating back to the 1920s at your neighbor's garage sale. It looks valuable and you decide to buy it and resell to coin collectors. The thing is, you have no idea as to what it is worth.
The easiest way would have to be checking it online. Currently, there are many sites online that provide helpful information on determining the real value of old coins. For beginners, some sites categorize values by the coin type, date of issuance and the estimated value. Most even have pictures, which make for easier referencing. Half-cents dating back to 1793 can fetch anywhere from US$500-5000 while silver commemorative coins are valued at anywhere between US$5 and US200.
The basic idea is that there are a number of factors that determine old coin value. For one, the more scarce or rare the coin, the higher the value. So it does not follow that the older coins are much more expensive than newer ones. The 1933 US$20 double eagle gold coin is the most expensive there is because there is only one of its kind, as compared to the thousands of Chinese coins dating back to the early centuries.
Another factor is what they call the bullion value, which is determined by the amount, or value of the precious metals it contains. Coins are categorized as either gold coin values or silver coin values.
Coins with higher grades fetch higher prices. Coin grade is determined by the condition of the coin. Note that coins are circulated in countries for commerce. However, aside from coins for circulation called "business strikes", some governments produce special pieces for collectors and official presentations. These uncirculated coins are referred to more popularly as "proofs", "proof-likes" and "specimens". They retain their flawless condition due to careful handling and packaging.
Another factor is the demand of such coin from collectors. This means that some coins, albeit more in number, might have higher values compared to scarcer coins, largely due to the fact that the former are more popular among coin collectors.
Last but not the least, a coin's quality is significant in determining its value. Quality refers to a coin's characteristics such as survival condition, execution, minting and overall aesthetic effect. Coins of poor quality lack luster, are discolored and uneven.
The above mentioned tips are just general guides. In the end, especially if you have potentially valuable coins, it is best to consult an expert's opinion to avoid being shortchanged should you consider to sell them personally. If you happen to opt to go to a coin dealer to sell your collection, ask for an expert (which is part of their service package) to truly determine the real old coin value.

Made France Iran says new nuke offer on table, France says no
Iran said on Monday that it was considering a new proposal from the major powers for the supply of nuclear fuel but France swiftly denied any such offer had been made.
France, officially called as the French Republic is located in the Western Europe. It is the largest country in the European Union by area. France has been in power for many centuries with strong economical, military, cultural and political background. Let's take a quick look at some of the interesting facts about France:

Physics Boat Crossing River With Current Question?
Hey everyone, I've got a physics question that sounds easy but keeps showing up as wrong.
In a 500 m stretch of a river, the speed of the current is a steady 5.0 m/s. How long does it take for a boat to finish a round-trip (upstream and downstream) if the speed of the boat is 7.5 m/s relative to still water?
Thanks in advance.
With the upstream:
Velocity of stream + velocity of boat
-5.0 m/s+7.5 m/s=2.5 m/s
Time upstream+Time Downstream=Total time
200 s+40 s=240 s
Believe it or not, the current Medicaid requirements are not consistent from one state to another. Since the Federal government does not clearly state rules for accepting or denying individuals for the Medicaid health program, it is largely left up to the states to set their own guidelines.
There are some guidelines from the Federal government which tell the states who they absolutely must cover, but they do not list general guidelines beyond that for denying or accepting most people. Each state must grant coverage to individuals qualified under the Federal rules, but everyone else is left up to the individual state's policies.
Two of the most common ways to automatically be qualified for the Medicaid program is to receive Federal income assistance of some variety or to prove that you are at or below 133% of the current national poverty level. This isn't the same as Medicare coverage, which is a different program all to together.
Instead of trying to decipher the rest of the complicated guidelines the Federal government has set to ensure groups of people are automatically covered, you should contact your local Social Services or Medicaid office to inquire whether you are eligible for free medical benefits.
When you contact your local office or set an appointment to apply, make to ask about any other State operated programs which may be of help to you. Often, states have their own programs which are designed to pick up people who do not qualify for Medicaid and give them the help they really need.
Most people who qualify under the current Medicaid requirements will also qualify for other services through the state or federal government. This may include food stamps, housing, and other basic living needs. The only way to determine whether you qualify any of these types of services is to walk into your local Social Services agency or make an appointment with someone in that office.
In order to qualify for coverage you'll need to meet certain Medicaid requirements, which can vary from state to state. You can learn more about Medicaid, Medicare coverage and many other supplemental health insurance issues by visiting the site today.
Felt Fly What does it feel like to fly a plane yourself?
I'm planning on going on an introductory flight on a Cesna150 soon. I was wondering like how bumpy it is or how difficult it was. I'm really nervous because I've been considering becoming a pilot for a long time but this is my first time on a small plane.
All I can say is allot will depend on your first time experience. Make sure that you pick a good clear day, with no wind gusts. It better to go, either early in the morning or in the evening, when the sun is not as hot, so that you don't get thermal turbulence. Make sure your instructor tells you what to expect, so there are no surprises. Do expect to get some bumps, as light aircraft are not as stable as the large airliners. I'm sure you will get to handle the controls, and this will give you an insight as to what it's like to fly the plane yourself. Every flight is a personal challenge, and the sense of satisfaction when you get a landing right is great.
I have a friend who is considerably overweight, infact she is obese. Her doctor has said her metabolism is the equivalent to that of a sloth, and since those mammals who are indigenous to the South American Rainforests, rarely ever move, it's a pretty worrying statement.
The sloth spends most of its life upside down and eats leaves. Its digestive system is so slow it can take up to a month to digest a traditional meal.
So why am I telling you this?
Well, it's because I think I am turning into one too.
No, I haven't started swinging from the trees (yet), but have just been on holiday to Florida and returned with a weight gain of ten pounds. I only actually went for ten days, but in light of the way I felt in the seat on the plane coming back it's probably just as well.
Last year my friend flew for the first time. She was very anxious about it. The problem was not the actual flying but her concern she wouldn't fit into the seat, or worse still, having got seated, she wouldn't be able to get out again.
I am happy to report her trip went well, but it has inspired her to lose some weight so the next time she ventures "abroad", she won't suffer so much anxiety.
On the same subject, you may have noticed that many airlines are reducing the amount of luggage you can take, and also weigh your hand luggage. This is particularly noticeable on some of the smaller airlines. Gone are the days when people can put everything but the kitchen sink in their handbags.
So, are the airlines being greedy and selfish, or just sensible? I'll opt for the latter and here's why.
A helicopter pilot told me that apart from the fuel and weight of the cargo they carry, the crew and the passengers also have to be weighed. Weight is critical to determine lift and how long they can remain in the air. Since most of his passengers are male, if they can't physically weigh them, each person is estimated to be 200 lbs, or 91 kilos. That's just over 14 stones.
Have you looked around lately? How many men, and sadly women, do you know who weigh that and more?
Now weight in a helicopter is probably more critical than that in an aeroplane but it is certainly significant. When I flew out to Florida my luggage was weighed but I wasn't. It was the same coming back.
Admittedly there were different people on the aircraft on both flights, but lets just imagine everyone on the flight out, including the crew, also returned on the same flight back. If each person enjoyed their holiday as much as I did and gained proportionally the same amount of weight, then it would be surprising if the plane took off at all on its return journey.
It seems the most dangerous part about flying is the take off and landing. Being overweight and obesity have been blamed for many medical problems, but now it seems, it's also the cause of some plane crashes -especially the smaller ones.
Wood Lures Mother Lode fishing report
Wild winter weather kept a lot of anglers from fishing this week, but we have had a number of excellent reports from fishermen who came out on some of the better days. Dick Reisinger and Kris Sulonen, of Sacramento, caught seven fine trout Saturday with a big fish at 3 1/2 pounds.
For me there are few things in life as wonderful as standing up to my waste in a flowing river attempting to catch a fish. To me, this is river fishing, and it's as close to heaven that I can get. In this article I'm going to discuss some river fishing tactics that will help you become a much more efficient and successful angler. These tactics nave been proven through more than fifty years of combined river fishing experience, and will help you as soon as you implement them
When it comes to river fishing, the first tactic I'm going to discuss is to make sure that you're on the water at the proper times. The proper time to be on the water is simpler than you might imagine. It has to do with two forces of Mother Nature, specifically the weather and moon. That's right these two factors, the weather and moon, have as much to do with you catching fish as the type of bait/lure you use.
In order to nail down this river fishing tactic, making sure that you're on the water at the best times, you need to pay attention to the weather and moon. Using this information to your advantage is a great river fishing tactic. It's not necessary to become a scholar on the subjects either. You can learn what you need to know by doing a little research (which as we all know is free on the internet).
The next river fishing tactic is to always present your bait in a natural manner. In most instances, especially with live worms, this means using gang hooks. I always have gang hooks with me while river fishing and you should as well. You see, gang hooks are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem, thus enabling live bait to be presented in a totally natural manner. This makes a huge difference in bite rates.
When river fishing it's also important that your bait is always at your fingertips waiting to be used, rather than hidden in your fishing vest somewhere. This is where a bait bag comes into play. A bait bag is simple a small pouch that hangs from your body and holds your bait while river fishing. This way your bait is always at your fingertips and baiting up takes seconds, rather than minutes. This means you get more time with your line in the water (where the fish are), rather than out of the water. Employing a bait bag is a great river fishing tactic.
Start employing these simple (yet incredibly effective) river fishing tactics sooner, rather than later, and you'll become a much more successful angler. How am I so sure of this? Because I've personally been using these tactics for more than 20 years and know how effective they are. And if I'm lying, what the worst that could happen? You'll catch the same amount of fish that you normally catch and you wasted 2 minutes reading this article? That's the worst that could happen.
Trevor Kugler is co-founder of JRWfishing.com and an avid angler. He has more than 20 years experience fishing for all types of fish, and 15 years of business and internet experience. He currently raises his three year old daughter in the heart of trout fishing country... Montana!
I fish on a pier with deep water 50ft +. My problem is that i cant feel when my line reaches the bottom. is there a way i can tell? To me my rod is useless when it comes to deeo waters cuz i cant feel when it hit bottom.
If you have enough weight you should be able to tell when your line goes slack. Reel it up until you feel the weight. Also you might want to try using braid like fire line. It is more sensitive. Hope this helps.
Regarding felt sole shoes for wading boots and waders for Flyfishing. Advantages and disadvantages?
I've seen several people walk into a river for the first time wearing felt soles and they all comment on how they can walk around so much easier with them......
plus side:
1) they stick like they are glued in place(well maybe, but they do stick)
2)if you slip while fighting a fish, you're less likely to fall down & start fillin up in a panic....
3)and this is a huge one, mobility, you'll be able to move away from bushes, or move closer to the feeding lane you are workin, this means shorter casts or less mending of your line
4) they keep you fishin, wading all day in 50 degree water in shorts? derrick doesn't fish where I do, at some places even on 100 degree days you can't be in the water for all that long without having waders, so wearing them can be the difference...if you're spending hours waist deep in 50 degree water you pretty much have to have them.
negatives:1) they do wear out, if you fish hard and walk a bunch you can wear out felt soles in a season, they have kits to replace the soles but in my experience they are pretty beat up by that time, I usually spring for a new pair.
I use felt soled boots with steel cleats, if you think felt sticks well, the cleats with the felt really works well.....
Clothes designed for fly-fishing are different from those meant for hunting or camping. Clothing for the use of anglers is designed keeping in mind the fact that they spend time in water as well as on land. There are special items of clothing required for fly-fishing; these include waders, rain gear, a fishing vest, underwear, gloves, polarized sunglasses and a hat.
Hip or chest waders are an indispensable item required for fly-fishing. Hip waders may be used while fly-fishing in small streams, but chest waders that reach above the waist can be used for all types of fishing conditions. Two types of chest waders are available, namely, boot-foot waders and stocking-foot waders. The boot is an important part of the boot-foot wader. Many anglers prefer to use stocking-foot chest waders made up of neoprene, which need a separate pair of wading shoes.
Another essential item of fly-fishing clothing is a fishing vest. The fishing vest typically will have a number of large pockets to hold all the supplies that the angler would require for his fishing trip. One would not want to leave the water each time something is required. A good vest with Velcro fasteners is ideal because it allows quick and easy access to the tools and closes securely.
A rain suit of good quality material is another necessity for those practicing fly-fishing. To avoid perspiration on the inside of the rainwear, it should be manufactured with materials that breathe. The rainwear should close securely round the neck and wrists. The jacket of the rainwear should also have a hood.
Full-length underwear must be worn under the waders if you go fly-fishing. The underwear will prevent heat loss from the body if you stand in the cold water for numerous hours. Woolen underwear is the best choice. Other options for socks and underwear are Durofold. This material is a blend of wool, cotton and polypropylene.
A good pair of polarized sunglasses is an essential item of fly-fishing gear. The sunglasses reduce the glare of the sun and make it easier to see in the water. Gloves will help to keep the hands and fingers warm. However, wearing gloves will dull the sensitivity in the fingers. In fly-fishing, it is crucial to have full sensitivity to the fingers. To avoid the problem posed by wearing gloves, fly fishing gloves are designed to leave the tip of the fingers from the last joint, free for movement.
A wide brimmed hat will keep the sun off the face and protect the back of the neck and ears. The hat also protects the fly fisherman from being hit by hooks if a bad cast of the line or a strong gust of wind carries the fly towards the face or head.
The correct fly-fishing clothing gear will keep the angler dry, warm and safe. It adds to the comfort level and thus helps to enjoy the sport.

I want to go Ice fishing this winter, and know I'll need a hand auger, rod, tip-ups, etc, but I don't know what kind of bait to use, and I am a total amateur. I want to catch northern pike, walleye, and bass. I have no idea how fish behave in the winter, and I have a VERY limited budget. Does anybody have any ice fishing tips for me?
Oh, yeah. And I've never had any luck with lures, soft or hard, even in summer weather, so I don't think I'll use lures.
Ice fishing can be a lot of fun, but without the right gear it can be a real drag. You can't cheap out on boots and outer wear, obviously, but a shelter and gas auger aren't far behind those essentials.
You can start with a hand auger, and I won't even recommend getting a gas auger. When you're new to ice fishing, young, and still very excited about catching fish, that energy will allow you to use the hand auger and still enjoy yourself. However, at some point you'll go out with someone who has a gas auger or you'll be fishing near someone with one, and you'll start making little sacrifices (like going without food) in order to save up for one.
A shelter (even a little one) can become indispensable, too. If you've ever fished on a bitter cold day with wind, you'll understand. Again, when you first start ice fishing, your enthusiasm will keep you warm, but it won't belong before you're ready to upgrade from enthusiasm to actual shelter.
As for bait, I find that lures and bait together are best -- the fish are more sluggish in winter, which I find sometimes means subtle and half-hearted takes. And because you're somewhat limited in your ability to move around to find fish (especially with a hand auger), you have to draw them to you, despite their sluggishness. So, the lure provides flash, color, sound, and movement, and then added bait ensures an energetic take. I have usually used jigs with a worm, a minnow, or bacon on the hook. Sometimes, if we catch small perch, we will use those as bait, too.
I live in the west, so I've never ice-fished for northern pike, and I have a feeling there are special jigs and tackle for catching them. However I have ice-fished for bass and walleye, and jigs and bait have always worked, as long as the spot was hot.
You will also want to use depth sounders. These are clip-on weights you can use to find the bottom so that you can systematically fish from the bottom to the ice. Different fish will feed at different depths. For example, trout hold pretty deep in the lakes I've fished -- sometimes right at the bottom. Bass and perch are typically higher up in the water column and are found in vegetation or around submerged structure. I don't know about pike -- I'd imagine they'd be higher up in the water, too.
Anyway, I hope this helps somewhat. Good luck and tight lines to you.
